"You're in a band?"
"You have a record out?"
The 6 members of Loaded have gotten used to these kinds of questions over the past several
years. When you look at them, you could excuse the question. Sure, they wear dark clothes,
but where are the tattoos, the piercings, the big hair, the groupies, or the rickety touring
van? And they do seem a bit more "mature" then your average group with an album in the stores.
How (Why?) did this happen? It all starts with the Cleveland Browns.
When Art Modell loaded up the trucks and moved The Browns to Baltimore in 1996, Harry Spero,
a major Browns booster, felt a void. More specifically, he now had an extra three hours every
Sunday for a new hobby. Most guys would simply spend that new time with their wives and
children, but Spero had grander plans. 500 songs locked in a drawer were begging to be let
out, so in the best tradition of the Little Rascals, he got some guys together, found a barn
and decided to put on a show.
In the summer of 1998, Loaded left the barn for the world. What started as possibly one show
just to say "we did it" has turned into New York's finest pop group. All those months of
practicing have paid off on a sound that is familiar, yet unique. 6 guys, all with different
musical pedigrees, bring it to the table.
*Barry Harrison, the keyboard player, has skills honed from years in bands on the East Coast.
If you were married in the 80's, Barry may have played Hot Hot Hot at your wedding. Lucklily,
Loaded has changed all that.
*Dave Wasserman, the bassist, is also a musical veteran who's gone from the big hair & plastic
pants bands of his youth to the more normally coiffed, but sonically superior Loaded.
Thank you Dave.
*Chris Swartout is just the opposite. Aside from a pickup band at work, Loaded is the first
group he's even played out with. All those years sitting home learning every note of George
Harrison's has paid off. Pyrotechnic? No. Tasteful? Oh, yes.
* Bobby Wilson is the taskmaster behind Loaded's harmony sound. Not only does he have a voice
that can rightly be called "Daltrey-esque" he also has a great ear for finding just the right
harmony blend.
* Corey Roberts not only has a really shiny drum set which helps Loaded look professional,
he really knows how to beat them. His total dedication to his craft is something to be admired.
And he doesn't twirl his drumsticks like an idiot either.
*Harry Spero keeps us all employed. He has essentially written all of the band's material
and sings a lot of it. His pop sensibilities are impeccable. Okay, so he plays the guitar
lefthanded and upside down. It may look strange, but it sounds fine.
These 6 guys create a sound that is easy to describe. Imagine The Beatles growing up in
Detroit instead of Liverpool. Elvis Costello and Chrissie Hynde having a love child who
starts a band. Imagine The Beach Boys surfing at Rockaway Beach. Tom Petty in a Jayhawks
cover band. The Buffalo Springfield in a Barenaked Ladies cover band. I could go on forever.
In the end Loaded sounds like Loaded, which is simply wonderful.
